Glevum Voluntary Group benefits from salon's fund-raising
04/08/2011
The local Glevum Voluntary Group of Diabetes UK has been presented with a cheque for more than £1,200, thanks to the fund-raising efforts of a Bristol Road hairdressing salon. Brother and sister team Daniel Gray and Anita Dallimore raised a staggering £1,222.30 for the group by completing a 10-kilometre run, a hair grip contest, and a half-price bank holiday open day.
Daniel and Anita, along with stylist Briony Overthrow, wanted to mark the tenth anniversary of the opening of Shades Hair Design on Bristol Road, Gloucester, by giving something back to the community. Glevum chair Margaret Skinner said: “We are very grateful to Shades Hair Design for the magnificent effort and for all the hard work that goes in to all this fund raising. This is the largest single donation that our group has received to date, and we thank the team for all that they have done”.
“The funds will help towards the purchase of a projector for our meetings and to support the work of the group” commented Margaret, adding “we always welcome new people to the group, and they don't need to be members of Diabetes UK, and of course admission is free”. The next group meeting will be on September 14th, when a talk will be given about the work of The Samaritans.
Non-members welcome to join us at all meetings.

Annual General Meeting 2011
22/03/2011
The groups AGM was held on Wednesday 9 march 20011 with a total of 28 members and 11 friends attending.
The meeting was opened by Margaret Skinner (Chairperson) who welcomed all present and thanked them for attending. The minutes of last year's meeting were accepted as correct with no matters arising.
Margaret then gave her report on the year saying that it had been a successful year with many interesting talks and activities, her full report is below.
Campbell Boggon (Treasurer) gave his annual report and stated that due to several donations and fund-raising efforts the group funds stood at £583.44. Whilst not a large sum, they are sufficient for the group's current needs.
There then followed the election of the Committee for the next year. All current members, with the exception of Mike Broome (Secretary) were standing for re-election. As there were no other candidates, they were all re-elected unopposed in their existing roles. There was only one volunteer for Secretary, and therefore Irene Steer was elected unanimously as the new Secretary, to take effect from the 1 April 2011.
Margaret them presented a small gift to Mike in appreciation of his services. He replied that he had enjoyed his time as Secretary, thanked all for their support and said he would be remaining a member of the group.

January Meeting Recap
12/01/2011
For the January 2011 meeting we were given a very interesting and thought provoking talk by Kirsten Jones, a local Podiatrist/Chiropodist on foot care. It certainly brought home the importance of looking after your feet and the potential consequences if you do not, the pictures were quite gruesome!. She gave much good advice on how to avoid the potently serious consequences and answered question from those present. She also explained that there is in fact no difference between a Podiatrist and Chiropodist. The name Podiatrist was brought in when those practising in the profession where required to hold approved qualifications and register with the professional body, however Chiropodist is still in common use.

The Pampered Chef
22/11/2010
The November meeting of the Group had all the members present licking their lips in anticipation as we watched a cooking demonstration by Juile
Collinson from Pampered Chef.
Julie prepared two items for us, one an exceedingly good dip, and the other a very tasty rice dish. She had also pre baked a fruit flavoured
pastry slice cake for us to sample. Of course these culinary delights went down very well, and as they were all diabetic friendly, it was an
excuse for more than one person to have several pieces of the cake!
The evening was designed to showcase the various cookware and kitchen utensils that Pampered Chef produce and raise funds for the Group. Julie
gave a very relaxed and friendly demonstration, if unfortunately limited due to the non availability of the oven in the Community Centre, having
to rely on a small microwave instead. However all present enjoyed the event, and quite a few orders were placed which will earn a much needed
donation to the Group funds.
Picnic Tea Fundraiser
24/08/2010
Pat and Norman Douse very kindly hosted a Picnic tea, as a fundraiser for the Group, at their home on Sunday 22 Aug. The event was very successful with the weather being very kind with bright sunshine and a large gathering of group members, friends and family.
Pat put on a wonderful spread of sandwiches, savouries and cakes, and of course plenty of tea, plus something a little stronger for some. The fund raising activities were organised by Michelle, Pats daughter in law & group member, and consisted of a raffle, lucky dip, guess the weight of the cake and guess how many “stone chips” were in an ornamental vase.
Every one present enjoyed the afternoon and dug deep as just over £110.00 was raised for Group funds. I would like to say, on behalf of the Group Committee, a very big thank you to Pat & Norman for volunteering and organising the Picnic tea in their home, Michelle for the raffle etc, and also to all those who attended and gave so generously.
Summer Tea Cruise - Recap
13/06/2010
Mike organised a delightful boat trip to Saul Junction along the Gloucester and Sharpness canal.
Group members, family and friends recently enjoyed an afternoon tea cruise on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal. The cruise departed from the Gloucester Waterways Museum in Gloucester Docks on their pleasure boat King Arthur, and sailed as far as Saul Junction near Frampton Upon Severn.
Unusually, the weather was perfect, with a typical warm English sunny summer afternoon, allowing all to enjoy the views of the Gloucestershire countryside as we sailed by.
There was a half hour stop at Saul Junction to look around and then back on the boat for a lovely light afternoon tea (with cakes!!) on the return trip. The cruise was a great success, with all aboard enjoying an afternoon of relaxing and watching the world go by, in fact so much so that many asked if we could organise another trip next year... we shall see.
